Photography contest
ON July 27, Animals Asia Foundation and Tencent Inc initiated a nationwide online photo contest to celebrate World Animal Day 2011, which falls on October 4. Themed "Sharing love with them," the one-month event calls for more love and care for animals.
Pet owners all around China are invited to upload original photos of them and their pets. You can also "say no to dog and cat meat" through creative pictures. Photos must be submitted at the end of August. Award winners will be announced on September 26.
As the ambassador for Animals Asia Foundation, Hong Kong singer/actor Karen Mok endorses this photo contest . She once joined a public service program to rescue bears in China. Mok raises stray cats and dogs. This time, she says: "Pets bring us lots of fun. Do not hurt them. We are friends."
It's not the first time the Animals Asia Foundation has held this contest. Last year, more than 4,000 pictures were received. This year, all of the photos will be put into five categories, each of which has three awards. The top five amateur photographers will win a SLR camera.
World Animal Day has been celebrated for more than 90 years. October 4 was selected as World Animal Day in honor of St Francis, a nature lover who called for a blessing for animals. Now, World Animal Day offers people a chance to highlight the plight of wildlife.
