The top dogs

LAST Tuesday, a five-year-old Scottish deerhound named Hickory received world attention when she was crowned best in show at the 135th Westminster Kennel Club, the prestigious US dog competition attracting 2,622 dogs, representing 165 varieties.

Besides Hickory, Malachy, a Pekingese; Jack, a Yorkshire terrier; Jayne, a Chinese shar-pei together with a Portuguese water dog, a smooth fox terrier, bearded collie and black cocker spaniel also made their owners feel proud after being voted as the seven best dogs in this year's contest in New York.

Although these triumphant dogs shared some common characteristics such as good appearance, bright eyes and, of course, cuteness, they each confidently displayed their own distinct personalities on the stage, some being shy, some elegant and some sexy.

Additionally, their tacit interaction with their owner, just like old friends, was another winning factor. As Hickory's handler Angela Lloyd said, "People who own, breed, show dogs dream of this day."
