3D spectacular about ‘immortal qi’

An original multi-media spectacular, “Immortal ‘Chi’ — The Ultimate Quest for Balance,” is a 3D fusion of Chinese martial arts, acrobatics, dance and music.

In its world premier in Shanghai on December 24, the production about the life energy known as qi (or “chi”) takes the audience on the mystic journey of Chi Man, a tai chi master.

He is pursuing ultimate balance in his qi world, a place ruled by magical laws, where his “balance” is lost and found.

Directed by Canadian Erick Villeneuve, the visually extravagant show features original music, lavish costumes, sets and lighting.

Villeneuve, who directed “ERA-Intersection of Time,” transforms the stage to a gigantic version of the video game “Tekken” with 3D technology and the music of traditional Chinese instruments such as drums, guzheng (large zither) and erhu (two-string fiddle), as well as electronic, pop, and world music.

As drums play, actors practice tai chi and actresses perform.

Next year the production goes on national tour.

Date: December 24, 7:15pm

Venue: Daning Theater, 1222 Pingxingguan Rd

Tickets: 100-380 yuan

Tel: 5637-0353
