AYO to play two city dates
THE Asian Youth Orchestra, which has been holding its annual summer festival and rehearsal campus in Hong Kong, begins a three-week world tour with a stop in Shanghai for two performances at Shanghai Oriental Art Center and Shanghai Concert Hall.
The AYO, founded in 1987 by conductor Richard Pontzious and violist Yehudi Menuhin, is one of the top youth orchestras in the world.
The 104 members are among the finest pre-professional musicians aged from 17 to 27 from China, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
Chosen through highly competitive auditions, they get together for six weeks each summer, initially for a three-week summer festival and rehearsal camp in Hong Kong, then for a three-week Asian concert tour with celebrated conductors and solo artists.
This year, 22 musicians are from the Chinese mainland.
At the Oriental Art Center, the orchestra will play Barber's "Adagio for Strings," Ravel's "Bolero" and "Piano Concerto in G" and Stravinsky's "Firebird Suite" (1919). The concert will be conducted by Pontzious and the piano soloist will be Jean Louis Steuerman.
The next day at the concert hall, the orchestra will perform Brahms' "Symphony No. 4 in E Minor," Mozart's "Piano Concerto No. 20 in D Minor" and Tchaikovsky's "Francesca da Rimini." Matthias Bamert will be guest conductor.
The tour continues with concerts in Beijing, Tianjin, Hong Kong, Taipei, Gwangju, Seoul, Kyoto and Tokyo.
Since its inaugural concerts in 1990, the orchestra has staged 275 concerts in Asia, Europe, the United States and Australia.
