Art show promotes Xinjiang

AN international touring exhibition by big-name Chinese artists features exotic scenes of China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

The exhibition at the Shanghai Art Museum contains around 150 paintings by around 100 artists, such as Ai Xuan, Wang Yidong, Yang Feiyun, Guo Runwen and Len Jun.

"This exhibition aims to promote Xinjiang to more people both home and abroad," says Jiang Ke, a member of the organizing staff.

The exhibition toured Beijing and Guangzhou before opening in Shanghai. It will travel to the United States, Europe, Japan and Turkey, Jiang says.

The vast, resource-rich region borders six countries and is China's gateway to Central Asia.

The exhibition features realistic paintings of the people, daily life and scenery in the predominantly Muslim region, which contains vast stores of China's mineral wealth. It ranges from Uygurs in folk costumes to breathtaking desert.

There is a saying that Xinjiang is a place where "the four seasons coexist simultaneously in the same valley, and the gamut of weather conditions can be found in an area no larger than 100 square miles."

Date: Through April 17, 9am-5pm

Address: 325 Nanjing Rd W.
