Artsy concept for hospitality industry

ART, or what some people call art, is showing up everywhere. Now it appears on the electronic swipe key cards of hotels in this city.

Key cards usually bear only a room number, hotel logo and contact information.

But prominent artist Yan Lei, known for outrageous works, has a new take on the "key" concept. He has designed a set of limited-edition key cards as part of the Unlock Art program.

"Each set has four key cards," Yan says. "When the four are put together, they form a unique abstract tableau, while each card individually is an art piece."

The large "key" of four parts will be placed at the entrance to greet guests.

Yan, together with Chen Wenbo, are chosen for LM 100, a program that cooperates with artists around the world to create artwork placed in prominent areas in hotels.

"LM 100 is not a club, it's a family of international artists, designers and architects who are reinventing the hotel with the vocabulary of their individual pioneering work and experience," says curator Jerome Sans, a founding member of LM 100.
