Award-winning works grab spotlight
Peking Opera dolls and a dancing robot are among the dozens of works now on display at Global Harbor shopping mall.
All the items picked up awards last week at the city’s Invention and Creativity Competition, part of Shanghai’s first Citizens Art Festival.
The competition attracted around 2,000 submissions by residents aged from seven to 80 years old.
Some are of artistic value while others are practical and designed for everyday life.
Yin Jiahong, a retired resident in his 70s, made a series of Peking Opera dolls. He made them with upcycled textiles.
The dolls feature characters like wu sheng, an acrobatic male, and qing yi, a virtuous female.
The delicately drawn faces, nuanced gestures and facial expressions are impressively realistic.
Yin says he started making Peking Opera dolls 30 years ago after he saw a Japanese doll in a kimono that cost 10,000 yuan (US$1,639).
It occurred to him that he might introduce Chinese dolls clad in traditional Peking Opera costumes to foreign markets.
It took Yin many years to learn how to paint, carve and embroider in his leisure time. Many of his dolls have received awards at various exhibitions.
“In this fast-paced modern world, many traditional crafts now face extinction because they require a lot of dedication, skills and passion,” Yin says.
He is also considering donating hundreds of dolls so that more people will become interested in doll making.
Also on display is a cute dancing robot created by Jiang Yijing, a 12-year-old middle school student.
The robot wears a costume made out of paper cuts.
She and her friends have also invented a suitcase that weighs itself.
Other items on display include cool T-shirts, new musical instruments, induction lamps made from biscuit tins and a quadcopter with cameras to monitor fires and air pollution.
Putuo District government official He Lifen says the competition has been fun and that he has enjoyed seeing how creative people can be.
He adds that some items will be selected for mass production.
