Brushing up for the pet fair
THE Shanghai Pet Fair - an annual carnival to encourage pet care, promote new concepts, technology and products, as well as helping develop China's pet medicine - will be held in ShanghaiMart, starting today.
Hosted by the Shanghai Pet Trade Association, the three-day fair features the China Dog Show, a dog Spring Olympics, a pet grooming competition and an ornamental fish contest.
It will offer extra support for stray animals, show off new pet products and provide a forum for vets in China.
The pet fair is an opportunity for pet lovers to exchange their experiences and stories.
A pet fashion show, supported by Channel Young, offers visitors a chance to stretch their imaginations and show off their pets dressed in anything from an Elvis costume to a wedding gown. The winner will get pet-care gift package worth 1,000 yuan (US$146).
One of the highlights of the pet fair is the China Dog Show, one of the country's first and earliest professional pet competitions. It has adopted the FCI (Federation Cynologique Internationale) regulations and this year the contest has invited Wyoma Clouss and Terri Lyddon, two of the world's top judges, to take part.
The pet grooming competition attracts some of China's most skilled dog groomers and the winner will have a chance to study pet grooming in Italy.
The pet fair is also a one-stop pet care shop with products ranging from pet food, toys and healthcare tools with international brands such as French Royal Canin and US Natura - the first brand to meet the standards established by the Association of American Feed Control Officials - and DoggyMan from Japan.
"The 2008 Shanghai Pet Fair attracted nearly 11,000 visitors and the number is expected to jump this year," says Ban Jing from the Pet Fair organizer.
Date: February 27-March 1
Venue: Shanghai Mart, 99 Xingyi Rd
Admission: 30-40 yuan
