Christmas choral music from around the world

Carols and songs from many countries will be performed in a Christmas Eve and Christmas Day concerts by the Shanghai Philharmonic Symphony Choir.

Conducted by Zhang Rui, the choir will present around 20 Chrismas-related songs at Shanghai Oriental Art Center on December 25 and 26. The organist will be Thorsten Maeder.

The program includes songs such as Mendelssohn’s “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” the Irish song “Angelus ad Virginem” (“Gabriel to Mary Came”), as well as John Rutter’s contemporary works such as “Mary’s Lullaby,” “Christmas Lullaby,” “Star Carol,” “Shepherd’s Pipe Carol” and “The Very Best Time of Year.”

Compositions by Rutter, a Briton, show the influence of the French and English choral traditions in the early 20th century, as well as American light music and classic songwriter.

Established in 2007, Shanghai Philharmonic Symphony Choir has recorded all the vocal works by Oscar-winning Chinese composer Tan Dun and other composers for the opening ceremony of the 2007 Special Olympics Summer Games in Shanghai. The choir has cooperated with Argentine classical dancer Inaki Urlezaga, his Ballet Concierto group, and with the Cologne Opera House.

It recently collaborated with the Polish soundtrack composer, Zbigniew Preisner, at the French “Red, White and Blue” concert at “Music in the Summer Air” festival in Shanghai.
