Classic commedia dell-arte

THE commedia dell-arte classic "The King Stag"(1762) will be staged in Chinese by the Shanghai Theater Academy this week.

Involving masks, elaborate costumes and fantastic, magical elements, it tells the story of Keng Deramo's quest for love in a world of treachery.

He is transformed into a stag by the father of a woman whom he has rejected as a bride.

The one-and-a-half-hour play - without subtitles - incorporates elements of circus, street theater, singing and dancing.

It is directed by Russia-born, US-based director Dmitry Troyanovsky.

Using comedy and fairytale, it addresses the question "What do we fall in love with - body or soul?" says Troyanovsky. "With a happy ending, it presents people learning true love through suffering."

The Venetian playwright, Carlo Gozzi (1720-1806), was a master of commedia dell-arte, emphasizing masked stock types and improvisation.

Troyanovsky, who taught at Tulane University, came to Shanghai three years ago to teach a Stanislavsky master class and started to give workshops at the Shanghai Theater Academy.

The show will be the beginning of his cooperation with local theater schools and institutes.

More than 10 Chinese actors, mostly from the academy, and a Peking Opera performer, will stage the show.

Time: June 26-30, 7:30pm; June 29, 2:30pm

Venue: The Duanjun Theater, Shanghai Theater Academy, 630 Huashan Rd

Tickets: 100 yuan
