Concert hall to 'dance' with 3D animation
The Shanghai Concert Hall will not only host a New Year's Eve concert, but the building's exterior itself will appear to "dance" with lights, music and 3D animation in a three-minute show.
The aim is to attract more people to classical music with the spectacle and to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the concert hall.
The brief show involves the classical European architecture, music and audio-visual technology.
The outdoor show starts at 9:45pm and lasts for more than three minutes, before the Vienna Johann Strauss Capelle's New Year's Eve Concert.
A 3D animation will be projected on the building and orchestral music will develop the story.
Though producing 3D animation is not difficult, ensuring that it is tailored to a work of architecture is demanding, says Ye Feng, technical director of Crystal Digital Technology Co. His technicians produced the famous animation of the already-famous painting "Along the River on the Qingming Festival" in the China Pavilion at the World Expo 2010 Shanghai.
"The features of the building itself can help make the vision more vivid and dimensional," says Ye. "And with the help of music and light, audiences may even witness the building 'dancing'."
Though a group of local classical music fans have been fostered in the past few years, classical music is still considered too lofty to be appreciated by many people, says Zhang Ming, general manager of Shanghai Concert Hall.
"We are trying to develop new ways to attract more music lovers," Zhang adds. "The 3D animated audio-visual gala is one attempt."
The Vienna Johann Strauss Capelle, conducted by Michael Tomaschek, will present a New Year's Eve concert shortly after the 3D show. The orchestra performed as accompaniment for royal triumphant marches. The musicians wear elaborate red dress suits and white trousers.
The program includes Strauss works such as "Treasure Waltz," "Furioso-Polka," "The Blue Danube Waltz" and "Southern Rose Waltz."
