Dazzling masterpieces of red art
MASTERPIECES of "red art" from one of the most distinguished private collections will be exhibited at the Shanghai Art Museum from November 18 to 29.
While most exhibits of red art - those sought-after patriotic works aimed to inspire and build the nation - are held in art museums and government institutions, "The Revolutionary Era" exhibition is on loan from Wang Wei and Liu Yiqian, an influential private collector couple.
The exhibition features 57 works - oil paintings, prints, sketches and sculptures.
Early this year, the couple auctioned the world-famous "Rare Birds" painting from Emperor Huizong of the Song Dynasty (960-1279) for 60.6 million yuan (US$8.9 million) and late designer-artist Chen Yifei's "Wandering" for 40 million yuan.
The upcoming exhibition will feature works from noted artists, including big names such as Chen, Wu Zuoren and Jin Shangyi.
It is said that the exhibition represents the biggest private collection of red art in China.
"The show provides a rare opportunity for the study and research of red art," says Curator Chen Lusheng.
The works on display convey ideas deeply rooted in the Chinese people's consciousness.
For example, Chen's "Wandering" features a man deep in thought, standing before a wall on which are painted scenes from Chinese history.
"Some of them are really national treasures," Curator Chen says, "because in the particular period, a work would be created by a group of artists, not an individual."
This exhibition only represents a small part of the private collection.
According to one art insider who declines to be identified, the collecting couple plans to open a museum in the near future.
