Drum roll for a different drummer in concert
PERCUSSIONIST Li Biao, who is recognized around the world for his creativity, will perform a concert on October 10 with his ensemble at the Shanghai Concert Hall.
The program features "The Rite of Mountains" by Guo Wenjing and arranged by Li in memory of the Sichuan earthquake on May 12, 2008.
"It's a big challenge to perform this work. It needs the 100-percent energy and passion," says Li.
The program will also feature "Valencia," "Ogoun Badagris," "Clap Trap," "Bridging the World," "Temazcal," "Marimba Spritueal," "Ratime," "Head Talk," "Taklamakan" and "Drumming."
Li, born in Nanjing, capital city of Jiangsu Province, started drumming at the age of five and was soon recognized as a talent. He attended the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and went on to study in Moscow and Munich, Germany.
He is known for his smooth technique, his understanding of percussion instruments and his remarkable musicality. He has earned numerous music awards.
Li has performed in festivals, including the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, Sommerkonzert Zwischen Donau und Altmuehl, Festival der Nationen, Fuji Music Festival and Bela Bartok Festival, Bad Kissingen Music Festival and Music Biennale Zagreb.
He has also performed as a soloist with the China Philharmonic Orchestra, London Bass Orchestra and others.
The Li Biao Percussion Group was established in 2005 with six musicians from around the world, including classically trained musicians as well as specialists in varied areas of folk music.
They are known for a wide range of musical genres, including classical, jazz, modern and pop, and for creating a unique sound.
The group travels with more than 100 musical instruments weighing nearly 5 tons. In 2008, the ensemble performed at the closing ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
The performance is part of a China tour that includes Beijing, Yantai and Qingdao in Shandong Province, and Guangzhou in Guangdong Province.
