East interacts with West

COMMUNICATION between East and West will be at the fore with a series of concerts during the Shanghai Spring International Music Festival.
Musicians from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music will cooperate with five overseas orchestras, including the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, Singapore Chinese Orchestra, Nieuw Ensemble from the Netherlands and Haba Quartet from Germany. They will combine for seven performances from May 8 to May 17.
“Spring is a beautiful season for music, and it should not only be limited to domestic musicians and spectators. The music should also be international and spark cultural communication,” says Xu Shuya, president of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, organizer of the concerts series.
Apart from the repertoires of the overseas orchestras, at least one or two works by Chinese composers will be performed at each concert.
One of the highlights is RSO Vienna’s cooperation with violinist Huang Bin, pianist Song Siheng and violist Shen Ziyu on May 14 and 15 at Shanghai Oriental Art Center.
They will present classical pieces like Rachmaninov’s “Piano Concerto No. 2,” Mozart’s “Haffner” Symphony No. 35 in D Major, and Dvorak’s “Symphony No. 9,” as well as Chinese works like Xu Shuya’s “Insolation,” Xu Mengdong’s “Symphonic Fantasia” and Wen Deqing’s “Love Song and River Chant.”
The Singapore Chinese Orchestra will bring a rich variety of music to its “Fusion of East and West” show. The program list includes “Buka Panggung,” inspired by Malaysian shadow puppetry, and “Tribal Dance” by Chinese composer Wang Jian Min.
