Folk art show celebrates Horse Year
An exhibition of Spring Festival customs is underway at the Shanghai Mass Art Center on Guyi Road.
In addition to offering family portrait photos, the center is holding its eighth annual exhibition of festival customs, folk culture and arts. It explains many customs, such as lighting firecrackers and eating dumplings.
To celebrate the lunar Year of Horse, the exhibition features paintings, sculpture and other art about horses. They include jade horses, bronze horses, red paper-cut horses and postcards.
Miniature paintings and carvings depict scenes of family reunion dinners and New Year’s celebrations.
Folk artists will stage demonstrations of their work, including some that are considered part of China’s intangible cultural heritage.
Ying Zihai, 55, has painted eggshells for three decades. The detailed work on goose and duck eggs includes landscapes, animals, and auspicious symbols of good luck and prosperity. The most challenging part is emptying and polishing the eggs so the surface can be painted.
Other arts and crafts include the painting of the inside of snuff bottles, straw weaving and dough modeling.
Lectures on folk culture are held throughout the exhibition that runs through February 25.
