German youth orchestra to perform
THE National Youth Orchestra of Germany will pay their first visit to China next month, performing at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center on July 20.
The concert will feature Mahler's "Funeral Rites" from Symphony No. 2, Schumann's "Cello Concerto" and Ravel's "Daphnis and Chloe Suite No. 2" and "La Valse."
The conductor has not yet been announced.
The German orchestra is comprised of more than 100 young musicians aged from 15 to 19 years. Most have won international young musician awards and others made their way into the orchestra through professional selection.
The repertoire includes classical, modern and contemporary music. Renowned conductors such as Kurt Masur and Simon Rattle have held the baton.
Apart from musical talent, it is the orchestra's passion that makes them special, Masur has said.
"As a conductor, I am very happy to work with these young and passionate musicians," Masur says.
"The direct communication with them makes me feel young again."
Cellist Nicolas Altstaedt will be the soloist for Schumann's "Cello Concerto."
Born in 1982, he was one of the last students of Russian cellist Boris Pergamenschikow.
He cooperates with top orchestras such as the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, Radio-Sinfonierorchester Stuttgart and Kremerata Baltica.
