Grimaud in recital of Bach, Beethoven
FRENCH pianist Helene Grimaud will give a Bach and Beethoven recital on December 11 at the Shanghai Grand Theater.
The program features works from the Well-Tempered Clavier of preludes and fugues, including those in C minor, C sharp minor, D minor, A minor and E major. She will also perform Beethoven's "Piano Sonata in E Major."
Her performance is part of the concert series "Grand Soloists from Around the World" which hit its stride when cellist Yo-Yo Ma performed on Wednesday.
Born in the south of France in 1969, Grimaud was accepted by the Paris Conservatory where she won the first prize in the piano competition in 1985, at the age of 13.
Classe FM in London said: "Helene Grimaud clearly feels the music she performs very deeply ... Grimaud lacks nothing in power, intensity or technical finesse ... one encounters a sense of fantasy."
Shortly after graduation, she recorded Rachmaninov's "Sonata No. 2" and the complete "Etudes-Tableaux Op 33" (Grand Prix du Disque, 1986).
The year 1987 was a turning point in her career. She appeared at MIDEO in Cannes and at the piano festival La Roque d'Antheron. She gave her first recital in Tokyo and was invited by Daniel Barenboim to perform with the Orchestre de Paris.
Grimaud has performed with many of the world's major orchestras and renowned conductors. She lives in Switzerland and is known for her passion for wolves.
