Highly-anticipated movies head for big screen

THE summer film season kicks off with the opening of two co-productions between China and South Korea.

Set in Shanghai, the comedy film “So, I Married the Anti-Fan” is based on a popular South Korean anime series. It’s a love story between a super star and a journalist who accidentally discovers the unknown “dark” side of the star. The film opened on Thursday.

“Bounty Hunters,” directed by South Korean filmmaker Terra Shin, centers on five bounty hunters who chase fugitives for money across China’s mainland, Hong Kong, South Korea and Thailand. It opened yesterday.

“The Last Race,” a war epic starring Dou Xiao and British actor Joseph Fiennes, also opened yesterday. It is about Eric Liddell’s humanitarian journey to China after winning gold in the 400m at the 1924 Paris Olympics. The story of the Olympic hero was also immortalized in the 1981 classic movie “Chariots of Fire.”

On July 8, Hong Kong cop drama “Cold War II,” starring Chow Yun-fat and Aaron Kwok, will be released. In the sequel, Hong Kong cops will continue to face unexpected intelligence challenge from unknown criminals. The original film was a big winner at the 32nd Hong Kong Film Awards, winning nine statuettes including those for best film, best director and best actor.

Action adventure film “Time Raiders” will be released on August 5. The film is adapted from the popular online novel “The Graver Robbers’ Chronicles.” It focuses on a group of explorers who embark on a journey to uncover the secrets of immortality in ancient tombs.

Also on August 5, Chinese suspense thriller “Golden Doll,” starring mainland actress Han Xue and Thai actor Tae Suttawat, is slated for national release.

The film focuses on a woman whose life takes a series of dramatic and weird turns after she brings home a golden doll from Thailand. The film features visual stunts and fantasy scenes to create a mysterious ambience.

Youth-oriented romance “Love O2O,” also based on an online novel, will be released on August 12. The film centers on campus love and combines a fantasy video-game world with real-life stories.

Foreign films slated for release include “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows” which opens today, “The Legend of Tarzan” (July 19) and “Ice Age: Collision Course,” the fifth installment of the series.

These films will all be presented in IMAX 3D in China.
