Jazzy concerts, open air bash and lots of rhythm
THE Shanghai Jazz Festival kicks off on October 1, and almost three weeks of indoor and outdoor shows are in store around the city and at the Expo site.
The 2010 festival "Love in Music" will feature concerts by eight world-class jazz singers and bands at Shanghai Centre on October 13-17. They include the Nils Landgren Funk Unit from Sweden, the American smooth jazz band Fourplay, horn player Roy Hargrove and his quintet, Grammy winner Dianne Reeves, and Branford Marsalis.
An outdoor music festival with multiple stages will be held at Pudong Century Park on October 16-17. Forty-six bands from around the world are expected to participate.
"The outdoor performances will present our original musical ideas with a low-carbon lifestyle," says Henry Shen, an organizer. "There will be music, beer and food."
The three stages will feature multiple genres, not only jazz but also blues, Latin, reggae, folk, rock and electronic from South Africa, Japan, Finland, Switzerland, Denmark, Brazil, Cuba and many other countries.
Taiwanese pop musicians such as Chang Cheng-yue, Shunza, Mavis Fan and mainland rocker He Yong will perform. From October 4 to 17, a variety of bands will stage at Puxi's Expo Square every day.
"The festival will show that 'music makes a better world,' in keeping with the Expo theme 'Better City, Better Life'," Shen says.
Performers will include E-Groove, Toby Mak, Lions of Puxi, Noukilla Band, Anan Trio, Jasmine's Band, Theo Croker, JQ's Band, Sugar Mama and Cotton's Band.
Free shows will be presented around the city nightly from October 1 to 17. Venues include Wujiang Road, Plaza 66, Jing'an Temple Square, Daning International Life Hub, and Jinqiao in Pudong.
The first Shanghai Jazz Festival was held in 2005 at JZ Club on Fuxing Road. The audience numbered around 3,000 at that time, and now it's around 40,000, organizers say and around 30 percent of the audience is expat.
It is now one of the most influential international music festivals in the world, says Shen.
