'Kaleido' creates new reality
ABOUT eight months after "Kaleido" hit the stage, its creative team has decided to change it around, adding more visual effects and different music.
The new and improved "Kaleido," a sequel to "Era - Intersection of Time," will be staged daily beginning today at the newly renovated Shanghai Gong Stage.
"In the new version, we work on the rhythm and have included more tricky parts to the story. The performers' acrobatic movements will look more dangerous and breathtaking," says director Eric Villeneuve, a noted Canadian artist and choreographer.
He also directed "Era" and the cultural gala at the APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation) Summit in Vancouver in 1997.
Four Chinese performers who starred in Cirque Du Soleil's "Quidam" will be a part of the new "Kaleido."
The storyline is simple as it deals with a person who loses something he really likes and tries to find it. It encourages the audience to stay positive and not to give up in the face of setbacks.
To make the scenes more vivid, a 360-degree rotating digital LED display will be added. The visual narrative will connect the past, present and future of China.
There are about 40 acrobatic performers in the new version. According to Villeneuve, the new show moves faster to cater to a younger generation.
"Acrobatics can be a storytelling art," he says. "You don't always need words to tell a story. I don't want to do theater with circus. I want to do a circus with simple but inspiring stories."
The acrobats do some amazing high-wire and trampoline stunts that will be combined with modern dance and singing.
Music director Michel Cusson has written a new score that was inspired by African music to create a passionate and fun atmosphere.
The show's name is derived from the word kaleidoscope, a toy that shows changing patterns and possibilities. The show's creative team believes "Kaleido" delivers a unique back-to-the-future experience with endless possibilities.
