Let there be light and music
THE Daning Music Festival of free outdoor performances will be held this month as part of the Shanghai International Arts Festival.
Apart from carrying on the tradition of featuring Chinese original singers, this year's festival will be highlighted by outdoor lighting shows by French and German artists.
Five music shows and lighting shows will be performed at Daning Life Hub plaza during the festival, which starts today.
The festival was first held in 2008, with acts by heavyweight Chinese rockers like the band Tang Dynasty and Cui Jian, credited as the "father of Chinese rock music." But the festival has expanded to include more than just rock music.
Popular Taiwan-based singer-songwriter Shun Za, who plays everything from R&B and jazz to soul and hip-hop, will take to the stage with Black New New, a boy band that sings in Shanghai dialect. Chinese rock band Omnipotent Youth Society along with singers Crowd Lu and Yu Siyuan will also perform.
Maximilian Hecker from Germany will be the only foreign performer in the festival.
Shun Za says she loves music festivals.
"The ideal concert for me is just like a party - having a bunch of friends performing live on the stage while the audience cheers," she says. "I will definitely bring my best to the concert this time."
Black New New pronounces as "chimpanzee" in Chinese that is known to many post-1980s generation in their childhood. The boys' group is composed of two Shanghai-native young men who grew up with typical Shanghai breakfast like youtiao (deep-fried dough stick) and doujiang (soybean milk).
They rap about what Shanghai used to be in their memories and joke about social issues many Shanghai people are facing today - from food to jobs.
"Their songs often remind me of myself playing music with friends when I was young," says Shun Za. "It is purely about presenting what they love to present and singing what they love to sing. It is just perfect."
