Low-cost tickets for Saturday citizen concert

MAESTRO Xu Zhong will conduct the Shanghai Sinfonietta in works by Mendelssohn on December 12 at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center.

To encourage music lovers to attend the "Saturday Brunch Concert" series at 10am, the tickets cost between 30-80 yuan (US$4.39-11.70). This is the 100th citizen concert.

The Mendelssohn program will feature "Fingle's Cave," "Violin Concerto," piano concertos and "Symphony No. 4."

Started in July 2006, the citizen concerts have become the largest concert series in China to popularize classical music. Almost 100,000 people are expected to enjoy the performances next year.

The upcoming season will include: "Homage to Great Musicians," "Bravo, Expo! Best of the World," "Symphonies for Hiking," "The Art of Chorus" and "Jazz/Chinese Music/Organ."

Next year there will be 52 concerts, one almost every Saturday morning at 10 o'clock. Forty major orchestral groups will perform.

Performances include Essence of the Vienna New Year Concert by the Shanghai Opera House Symphony Orchestra.

Other highlights by the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra include symphonic works by Beethoven and Chopin and promising talents with maestro.

Chinese Spring Festival Gala Concert will be performed by the Shanghai Jazz Orchestra and Blooms of Spring Concert by the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Chorus.

Conductor Zubin Mehta praised the citizen concerts: "Art is the embodiment of pure emotion; music is the cradle of our hearts. The Saturday Brunch Concert surprised me with its well-planned program and the annual audience of 100,000.

"I wish the Saturday Brunch Concert great success."

"To provide more opportunities for the audience to enter the Oriental Art Center and enjoy the concerts, the most expensive tickets in this series are only 80 yuan," says Lin Hongming, general manager of the Shanghai Oriental Art Center.

Next year the citizen concert series will be extended to Changzhou and Taizhou in Jiangsu Province, Wenzhou in Zhejiang Province and Hefei in Anhui Province.
