Orchestra of soloists in town on birthday tour

RUSSIAN violist Yuri Bashmet will team up with his "Moscow Soloists" Orchestra for a concert in Shanghai as part of its Asian Tour, celebrating the 20th birthday of the ensemble.

The concert at Shanghai Grand Theater on Wednesday follows a number of other performances by Russian artists in the city this month.

Dubbed the "Paganini of viola," Bashmet is widely recognized as one of the leading string players in the world.

His repertoire spans a range of periods and styles, but he is especially well-known for 20th century viola works.

Born in 1953, Bashmet began his musical career on the violin and later transferred to viola. He launched his international career in 1976 when he took first prize at the International Viola Competition in Munich.

Since then he has performed in recitals throughout Europe and North America with the foremost orchestras - including the Berlin Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic and Vienna Philharmonic - and conductors.

In the UK, The Times described Bashmet as "without doubt, one of the world's greatest living musicians," and he was named "Instrumentalist of the Year" at the 1994 International Classical Music Awards.

It is said that Bashmet's exceptional artistry has inspired many composers to write for him. Bashmet enjoys an especially close and productive relationship with Alfred Schnittke, who wrote a viola concerto for him.

The Moscow Soloists orchestra was founded by Bashmet in 1992 and is now credited as one of the world's most highly acclaimed ensembles.

They had their first performances in the Big Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, with most of its members young graduates from the conservatory.

Since then, the Moscow Soloists have given more than 1,700 concerts in some 50 countries around the world, often being praised as "the voice of their country."

The viola that Bashmet uses for his performances is a 1758 viola made by Milanese luthier Paolo Testore.
