Playlist a potpourri of old and new
THE 2016 Shanghai International Film and TV Festival will offer local movie fans the opportunity to watch classic and recent film productions and meet some of their favorite cinema celebrities.
More than 500 movies from home and abroad will be screened at 45 theater locations, including the Shanghai Film Art Center, SFC Yonghua Cinema City, Peace Cinema and Wanda International Cinema. The annual festival has earned its place on the world stage of cinema events. Last year, ticket sales totaled about 18 million yuan (US$2.77 million).
A film festival wouldn’t be a film festival without the red carpet parade of celebrities. Among those walking the much-photographed walkway this year, when the festival opens tomorrow, will be Chinese-American director Ang Lee, actor Bradley Cooper, South Korean heartthrob Lee Min-ho, Hong Kong actor Tony Leung, and mainland actress Fan Bingbing.
According to Fu Wenxia, an official with the festival’s organizing committee, a record 2,403 films from around the world were entered in the contest for the Golden Goblet Award and the Asian New Talent Award this year. Serbian director Emir Kusturica will be the jury president.
This year’s film fest will pay tribute to some of the icons of the movie world, like Woody Allen. Five of works from his long career will be shown, including “Magic in the Moonlight,” “Midnight in Paris” and his newest film “Café Society,” which opened this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
To commemorate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death this year, the festival will present the “Shakespeare on Film” program — a collection of classic British adaptations of the Bard’s works.
Among the stars in town for the festival will be British actor and scriptwriter Ian McKellen, known for his portrayal of Gandalf in the Peter Jackson trilogy “The Lord of the Rings.” McKellen’s classic portrayal of the title role in the 1995 film “Richard III” will be shown.
The festival will also screen seven movies of the late Hong Kong actor Leslie Cheung, offering a retrospective of his artistic talent across romances, thrillers, comedy, and drama. Among the movies to be shown are “A Chinese Ghost Story,” “Days of Being Wild,” “Once a Thief,” and “All’s Well, Ends Well.”
Jackie Chan Action Movie Week will offer some 20 action-packed pictures, including the South Korean box office sensation “Veteran,” Oscar-nominated “Sicario,” and the American thriller “Bus 657.”
The SIFF Project, a festival adjunct designed to spot new talent and highlight new film projects, will have mainland filmmaker Cao Baoping, producer Ma Ke, and Taiwanese director Midi Z. judge 20 new film projects.
Initiated 10 years ago, the SIFF Project is credited with helping launch up to 40 movies, including “The Piano in a Factory,” “Black Coal, Thin Ice,” and “Lost In White.”
Tickets for the 2016 Shanghai International Film and TV Festival are now on sale at local cinemas and on piao.taobao.com.
