Plucky couple make their Shanghai debut

THE harp, the plucked string instrument with the soft sound, is a popular feature in orchestra, opera and chamber music. And on Saturday, two harps will be played together on the Shanghai stage by two of the world's best harpists.

The Lipman Harp Duo, composed of two eminent harpists - Sebastien Lipman and his wife Sayo Lipman - will have their first concert in Shanghai

As the only such ensemble in Australia, the Lipman Harp Duo charms audiences with world-class playing in each performance, while presenting the rare and beautiful instruments simultaneously. The music performed usually includes both transcriptions and original works.

They will present more than 10 classic pieces on the night, including Bach's "Largo" from "Partita No 3" and "Bouree" from "Partita No 1," Grieg's "Wedding day at Troldhaugen," Damase's "Sonatine" and Bizet's "Carmen."

Sebastien Lipman, the French-Australian harpist, began his harp studies at the age of seven. He was appointed as principal harpist of the 120-member-strong Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in 1987, under the direction of maestro Herbert Von Karajan. At the time, 22-year-old Lipman was only the fifth harpist to take the position of principal harpist since the creation of the orchestra in 1882, as well as the youngest member of the orchestra.

In the following years, in this tenured position, he performed, toured and recorded extensively with distinguished world-famous conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim, Zubin Mehta and Sir Simon Rattle.

Since 1995, Sebastien has been based in Brisbane, Australia, where he has developed Australia's leading harp class at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University

Lipman combines his teaching activities in Brisbane with master classes overseas, as well as with performances as a concerto soloist and as a solo recitalist.

The husband and wife duo "Lipman Harp Duo" was formed by the couple in 2006. They have performed more than 100 concerts worldwide in the past four years. Their three albums - "Harp Fusion", "Scenes of Childhood" and "Arpeggio" - have gained great popularity among harp music lovers.
