Red art, diary in big Beijing sale

NEARLY 6,600 pieces of traditional ink-wash paintings, porcelain, oils, sculpture, ancient coins, jewelry, jade - and rare manuscripts - will go under the hammer at the China Guardian Autumn Auction November 21-23 in Beijing.

Among the highlights are a diary of celebrated writer Lin Yutang (1895-1976) and a traditional ink wash by Jiang Zhaohe (1904-1986), known for his "red art."

The auction house is one of China's largest and a touchstone of the art market. It ranks No. 1 with a total of 825 million yuan (US$120.8 million) in sales in China during the first half of the year.

"We are always trying to introduce something new yet collectable for our collectors," says Deng Jing, spokeswoman at China Guardian.

Early this year, China Guardian auctioned several letters written by Hu Shi (1891-1962), a renowned historian, philosopher and scholar, for 7.4 million yuan. Before the sale it was only estimated to fetch around 1.5 million yuan.

"Even we didn't expect the market's interest in hand-written materials by celebrities," Deng says.

This time a diary of celebrated author Lin will be auctioned. Lin wrote several books in English and was noted as a linguist, philosopher, traveler and inventor. Lin's original works and translations of classic Chinese texts into English were very popular in the West.

The diary is estimated to fetch around 500,000 yuan.

Another spotlight piece is a traditional ink-wash painting "Standing Up," 283 centimeters by 132 centimeters, created in 1949 by Jiang Zhaohe (1904-86).

Jiang is famous for his "red art" celebrating China's achievements since its founding in 1949.
