Renowned Confucian temples in China
Confucius (551-479 BC) is one of the most significant philosophers and educators in the history of China. He strictly prescribed orderly relations between the emperor and his people and orderly relations in family and society at large. He emphasized the importance learning and self-cultivation.
Many emperors adopted Confucianism as a national philosophy, encouraged worship of Confucius and many built temples and paid respects to the sage.
Countless Confucian temples have been built over thousands of years. Many have been destroyed but quite a few have been repaired and reconstructed.

The master’s residence is the core of the temple complex. It was the first of its type and was first built in 478 BC in the style of a lavish royal residence. Many emperors expanded the temple as they added more honorable titles to the philosopher.
Qufu is a good place to see a range of ancient Chinese architectural styles over different periods, appreciate around 1,000 stone steles bearing inscriptions by emperors. famous intellectuals and calligraphers.
Confucian Temple in Xi’an
Shaanxi Province
It was built in the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907) and relocated over the years.
Most of the temple buildings today were constructed within the past 500 years when the complex was greatly expanded. It served as a central university for scholars from around the country.
There are numerous buildings, temples, stone carvings and inscriptions. Style is typical of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).
