Retro show pays tribute to master painter

IT is not common to name a museum after an artist, but Liu Haisu (1896-1994) is an exception.

Liu was the founder of the New Art Movement in China and a great master in traditional Chinese painting. The Liu Haisu Art Museum was founded in 1995, the first Chinese museum named after an artist.

As a prominent painter and noted art educator, Liu held a niche in the history of contemporary Chinese fine arts in the 20th century.

The Liu Haisu Art Museum on Yan’an Road W. is now presenting a retrospective of works by the great master until September 25.

The exhibition includes oils and ink-and-wash paintings by Liu as well as his collection of antique paintings and books and videos about him.

The exhibits were selected from 911 pieces Liu and his family donated to the museum.

Liu showed a love for painting as a child and went to Shanghai at the age of 14 for professional training. When he was 17, he and some friends established the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, the first school of fine arts in modern China.

He traveled extensively in China and abroad. When he was in Europe he met some of the world’s best known artists in the early 20th century, including Picasso whom he met in Paris in 1929.

Liu was a master for mixing traditional Chinese painting with European modern art styles, such as Impressionism. Some of the paintings on display show his experiment with Impressionism.

Liu’s collection of ancient Chinese paintings is another highlight of the retro show. Some pieces are national treasures, such as “Peacocks Perching on Rocks,” a scroll painting on silk by Bada Shanren (1626-1705) and “A Military Review,” a painting by Li Zao (AD 265-420).

“We hope visitors can gain a better understanding of Liu Haisu’s life and artist career and the achievements of this great master through this exhibition,” said Zhu Gang, principle of Liu Haisu Art Museum, who also curates the retro show.
