Roll up! Roll up! A festival of the classic and new

TICKETS for the Panorama section of the 22nd Shanghai International Film Festival, to be held from June 15 to 24, go on sale today.

Online ticket sales start at 8am at dianying.taobao.com. Two hours later, cinemas including the Shanghai Film Art Center, Grand Cinema and Peace Cinema will also begin selling tickets.

More than 500 movies — classics and recent productions from all over the world — will be shown at 47 cinemas across the city. Public screenings, film workshops and virtual reality exhibitions will also be hosted for college students in Songjiang District.

The Internet Summit, another important program of the film fest, will be held on June 11 and 12 in Putuo District. Over recent years, the summit has attracted many Internet film and media companies to base themselves in the city. It will continue to incubate and develop promising Internet cultural programs.

Fu Wenxia, an official of the festival’s organizing committee, said this year’s fest will have two premieres: “The Eight Hundred” and “Beautiful Voyage.”

Directed by Guan Hu, “The Eight Hundred” pays tribute to the 800 Chinese soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the famous defense of the Sihang Warehouse in 1937 in Shanghai during the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression.

Film producers and crews will also be invited to visit film and TV locations around the city and learn more about the diverse production services the city has, covering location coordination, camera and props rental, and post-production.

During the fest, integrated regional cooperation of locations and production services will be strengthened in the Yangtze River Delta region.

Chinese actor Wu Jing, known for his impressive acting in the high-grossing movies “Wolf Warrior” and “The Wandering Earth,” will be the promotion ambassador of the fest.

Wu also stars in the highly anticipated film “The Climbers.” The film, which tells the story of China’s first mountaineers to conquer the world’s highest mountain, is slated for release on September 30.

Another Shanghai-produced sci-fi mega-production to be promoted at the fest will be “Shanghai Fortress,” which depicts mankind’s efforts to protect the earth from alien invaders. The film will hit cinemas across China on August 9.

Hu Jingjun, vice minister of the city’s publicity department, said the film fest’s influence is ever increasing and more films choose the fest as a platform for their global premieres.

This year, around 60 percent of the movies registered to screen at the festival are the latest productions. Some excellent works will also be selected for national release in the future.

Hu mentioned the Chinese box office success of the Japanese film “Shoplifters” and Lebanese film “Capernaum.” Both were shown and applauded at last year’s festival.

“The festival will continue to propel domestic film industry and serve as a platform for film celebrities to exchange,” he said. “More talented young filmmakers and promising film projects will also be discovered.”
