School’s roll of illustrious alumni
XUHUI High School has a star-studded roll of alumni, including scholar Li Wenyu, merchant Zhu Zhirao, writer Fu Lei and educator Ma Xiangbo, who is credited with founding three Chinese universities, including Fudan University.
“Ma Xiangbo bore witness to modern Chinese history,” says Fudan University Professor Li Tiangang, who is editing Ma’s complete works. “He was born in 1840, when the Opium War started, and lived for nearly 100 years.”
Born into a prominent Catholic family in Jiangsu Province, Ma enrolled in St Ignatius College — which later became Xuhui High School — in 1851. He later became a teacher and rector there. He was also a Jesuit priest and a scholar.
“Ma mastered at least seven foreign languages, including French, Latin, Italian, English and Greece,” Li says. “He was a rare talent with superb knowledge of both Chinese classics and Western studies. He was a devout and generous man, with a natural, often unrestrained personality. He donated all his assets to found Aurora University, Fu Jen Catholic University and Fudan University.”
In his later years, Ma lived on the third floor of the Tushanwan Orphanage, which is today’s Tushanwan Museum. To accommodate their elderly teacher, Ma’s students, including Peking University President Cai Yuanpei, donated the funds to have an elevator installed in the building.
