ShanghART exhibit explores motifs

At the beginning of the Chinese New Year, ShanghART is having an exhibition titled “Things from the Gallery Warehouse 6,” which focuses on videos and installations by artists Shi Qing, Xiang Liqing, Xu Zhen and Zhang Qing.

Apart from displaying some large-scale works stored in the gallery warehouse, this exhibit explores motifs that seem to be inconspicuous and random but in fact relate closely to each other.

For example, “From a Slice of Shanghai Electricity Mall” created by Shi, as well as Xiang’s countdown timer and Xu’s coin that never falls down, are all examining, expanding and playing with a string of words including “accident,” “coincidence,” “chance,” “superposition” and “indeterminacy.”

Artist Zhang displays three sets of artworks created between 2007 and 2009. “Nothing Is Impossible” consists of eight automobile hoods shaped by unusual impacts with dot patterns printed on the surface.

The idea is that the possibilities latent in a single fleeting moment are the hardest to predict. The core of “It’s Too Late” includes six videos with the same length — 3 seconds and 14 milliseconds — that talk about unfinished matters.

Visitors can capture the plot by using a remote control. “New Focus Method” records mobile captions in public spaces including the train station and bank. But only a part of the whole view is available, hence there is a special method of reading that is unusually rapid.

Date: Through February 23, 10am-6pm

Venue: H Space, Bldg 18, 50 Moganshan Rd
