Shanghai Oriental Art Center releases program lineup

SOME of the world’s best orchestras and troupes feature in Shanghai Oriental Art Center’s upcoming 2015-16 program lineup.

The season begins in style on September 10 with Liaoning Song and Dance Ensemble’s original stage production “Mei Lanfang.”

To celebrate its 10th season, Shanghai Oriental Art Center has lined up more than 200 concerts, dances, operas, dramas and recitals.

“Every year we release the season’s program a week earlier than the previous year, which gives us more time to promote the concerts and performances,” says Lin Hongming, general manager of Shanghai Oriental Art Center.

Orchestras from more than a dozen countries including Germany, the United States, France and Austria have been confirmed for the new season.

On January 22-23, maestro Riccardo Muti will lead the Chicago Symphony Orchestra into town with a performance of Prokofiev’s “Symphony No. 1,” Tchaikovsky’s “Symphony No. 4” and Paul Hindemith’s “Concert Music for Strings and Brass.”

Though Shanghai Oriental Art Center is known as the go-to venue for concerts and recitals in town, the theater is also extending its program in dance and Chinese opera.

The Mariinsky Ballet from St Petersburg, one of Russia’s two most prominent ballet companies, will bring “La Bayadere” to Shanghai from November 16 to 18. The classical ballet with music by Ludwig Minkus and choreography by Marius Petipa is world famous, yet seldom seen in Shanghai.

Prior to Mariinsky’s arrival, the Eifman Ballet of St Petersburg will perform a contemporary production of “Anna Karenina” with choreography by Boris Eifman.

In June 2016, the Royal Danish Ballet will stage “Napoli” and “La Sylphide.” The Royal Danish Ballet was founded in 1748 and is one of the world’s oldest ballet troupes.

China National Peking Opera Company will present seven performances including “The Orphan of Zhao,” “Female Generals of the Yang’s,” “Legend of the White Snake” and “Legend of the Red Lantern.”

The Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Stephane Deneve, along with violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann will present the closing concert.
