Singaporean pop star: Stay true to yourself

SINGAPOREAN pop singer Lin Junjie (JJ Lin to his fans) has launched his world concert tour "I Am."
He says he's been working out lately to improve his performance and stamina and to develop "six-pack' abs.
The Taiwan-based singer, songwriter, musician and actor has won numerous awards in Singapore, such as best new act, best male vocal and best songwriter.
The tour kicked off in Beijing yesterday and will land at the Shanghai Grand Theater on August 28.
Lin spoke to Shanghai Daily last month and offered a preview of the "I Am" tour.
Q: What are your expectations for the tour?
A: I want to use this opportunity to show my artistic growth to my fans. Therefore, I will present every memorable moment since my debut album to the audience. To achieve a personal breakthrough in performance, I have also been working out hard recently, as is shown in my six-pack poster.
Q: You didn't win the Taiwan Golden Melody Award this year. How do you feel about that?
A: Well, it's really a pity. But I did win some other awards like Top Local Artist of the Year and Top Local Songwriter of the Year at the 15th Singapore Compass Awards. Those awards were also a great validation of the value of my music.
Q: What does "I Am" mean? What's the message?
A: This world tour is a return to the original point. "I Am" advocates staying true to who you are. Everyone encounters difficulties at some time in life and it's easy to lose direction when you are vulnerable. Having gone through hardships in life, I learned to appreciate what god gives you.
It is only through understanding who you are that you can face your fate and accomplish your goal. So the concert is not just about me singing to the audience. It's about the power of music and I hope we can all draw strength from it.
Q: What's your impression of Shanghai?
A: I've always felt very close to Shanghai. I've been here before for my 2006 concert. Actually, this will be my third solo concert in the city. Shanghai is an impressive metropolitan city. It has everything, places to eat and places to shop. I happen to have a sweet tooth so I always choose Shanghai cuisine when I'm here.
Q: What's your impression of World Expo Shanghai?
A: Expo is a great opportunity to bring the whole world to Shanghai. I wrote the theme song "Every Touching Moment" for the Singapore Pavilion. It was sung by Stefanie Sun, Tanya Cai, A-do and myself. It was such an honor to be a part of this great event.
