Singing groups to compete

AMATEUR singing groups or choruses can sing their hearts out in a new TV contest on Art Channel, called "Choirs, Let's Show." All kinds of music are welcome - pop, R&B, jazz and folk music.

Any group with at least four members, Chinese and foreign, can apply through the end of the month by calling 5881-8800 or 5881-8411.

Starting this Sunday, performances will be broadcast every Sunday evening on the Art Channel.

Performances will be judged by veteran performers and music critics. The winners will be announced on April 24.

Winners can take part in city cultural performances for World Expo 2010 and may take part in an exchange with Europe.

More than 100 groups have entered so far, according to Zhang Minjie, a contest organizer.

SUNDAY, one of the contestants, has around 20 local singers with an average age of 70. They sing happy songs in English, such as "Jingle Bells."

Across, a seven-piece group from Shanghai International Studies University, will sing pop.

"Group singing is getting popular with more and more people," says Zhang. "They can stay young at heart and maintain their passion for live through this rewarding experience."
