Sounding good and sounding traditional

LOVERS of traditional Chinese music are in for a treat with a series of concerts running through early July.

The 2009 "Pin Yue Feng Ya" ("Elegant Music") series is presented by the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra and opened last Sunday at Shanghai Grand Theater with a variety of leading musicians.

Altogether there will be seven traditional Chinese music concerts at Shanghai Grand Theater.

The concerts aim to present the charms of Chinese music using many of the traditional instruments like the erhu (Chinese violin), the pipa (Chinese lute), the guzheng (Chinese zither) and strings and woodwinds from the south of China.

The performances are intended to inspire and revive the passion for traditional Chinese folk music.

The July concert "Ya Yue" will feature some of the leading Chinese folk musicians performing together and presenting the best of their repertoire.

The performers include erhu player Min Huifen, guzheng players Gong Yi and Luo Xiaoci, bamboo flute player Qian Jun and pipa player Zhou Tao.

The final concert - "New Rhythms for String and Woodwind Music" - will bring the typical music of Jiangnan (region south of the Yangtze River) from the south of China with its delicate melodies to the stage.

In the concert, different combinations of instruments will bring a new approach to the traditional airs. The program will showcase classic Jiangnan music like "Han Xiang" ("Fragrant Cold"), "Yi Jiangnan" ("Memory of the South"), "Yue Yue" ("Music of Joy"), and "Full Moon and Blooming Flowers."

The series, which includes the concerts, lectures and seminars, began in 2006, supported by the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra, Shanghai Grand Theater and the Shanghai Culture and Arts Development Foundation.

As well as the concerts by the leading folk musicians, some of the performers will give lectures, illustrating their music and talking to concert-goers. It will be a rare chance for music lovers to get close and personal with Chinese folk music.
