Studio 188 to play at Dream Factory
MEXICAN-AMERICAN lead vocalist Michael Luevano and Australian drummer and vocalist Michael "Mal" Collins formed the band Studio 188 in Shanghai in 2004.
After seven years, the band has grown to nine members and become a popular fixture on the Shanghai music and party scene with its infectious sound and rock and roll authenticity.
The band will perform on Saturday at the Dream Factory. They will perform songs from Earth, Wind and Fire, Sting, Deep Purple, Tower of Power, such as the soul-funk "Soul with a Capital S," and classics by Stevie Wonder, Phil Collins and Elton John.
"We want to combine rock, soul and reggae with the Year of the Rabbit as a backdrop," says lead vocalist Luevano.
Studio 188 takes its name from Luevano's home - the address is No. 188.
The band has a full-time sound engineer and three roadies.
Studio 188 includes band leader Luevano (lead vocal), Collins (vocal, drums), Jose Herrera (keyboard), Shun Zi (bass guitar) and Macleen Rangasamy (lead guitar).
The fun loving horn section, which is known as the "brass monkeys," is led by Neill Thacker (trumpet), plus Manuel Tapias Berrio (tenor sax) and Matthew Chan (alto, baritone sax).
The newest member is well-known vocalist Gilbert Kuppusami sharing lead vocal and playing the percussion.
"Our goal is to bring audience two hours of fun," says Luevano.
The band plays more than 40 shows a year, covering music from the 1970s, 80s and 90s to their original music.
"We hope to be rocking and rolling as long as the Rolling Stones," says Luevano. "We love what we are doing and we are a big family which also includes our wives and kids. Without their support, none of this could be possible."
The band will play shows in the United States this summer and in Thailand this fall.
Date: March 5, 9-11:30pm
Venue: Dream Factory, 28 Yuyao Rd
Admission: 50 yuan
