THE UK’s Globe Theatre is bringing “The Merchant of Venice” to Shanghai in September as part of a global tour. This classic tale of love, greed and vengeance begins with Bassanio borrowing money from his friend Antonio to finance his attempt to win the hand of Portia, a wealthy heiress. Antonio, in turn, takes out a loan from the moneylender Shylock. The loan will be repaid when Antonio’s ships return to the city. But if the money cannot be repaid, Antonio agrees give to Shylock a pound of his own flesh. Jonathan Pryce and Rachel Pickup star as Shylock and Portia in this new production.
