The passion and power of tango
THE Argentine tango is a unique expression of romance and passion brought to life by music and movement.
This evening at the Shanghai Times Square, music lovers will be able to enjoy and experience the huge variety of moods and rhythms of the tango in an authentic performance by the popular Argentinian band Ramiro Gallo Quintet.
The band is made up of Ramiro Gallo (violin and composer) - one of the country's most acclaimed ambassadors for the tango - Martin Vazquez (guitar), Lucia Ramirez (bandone), Marcos Ruffo (bass) and Adrian Enriquez (piano).
Gallo, who plays regularly with symphony and chamber orchestras at home and abroad, has established several groups dedicated to performing his own compositions and arrangements. In 2003 he won a prestigious Clarin Espectaculos award for his Tango Revelation.
The Ramiro Gallo Quintet was founded in 2000 and has performed at Buenos Aires' most famous concert halls as well as at the Albeniz Theater in Madrid and the Trindade Theater in Lisbon.
With a repertory largely made up of Gallo's original pieces, the quintet expresses vividly his creativity. The rich themes of the tango flow naturally through these Latin American pieces, making them the perfect setting for the composer's ideas.
According to Cathy Hau, deputy general manager of Shanghai Times Square, the performance is another fine cultural event following on from the well-received New Year's concert.
"The performance is also part of the quintet's Asian Concert Tour which includes two more concerts at Macau and Singapore," Hau says.
