Trio and Taiwan Orchestra
THE Vienna Piano Trio will open Shanghai Concert Hall's 2010-2011 season on Saturday, followed three days later by the Taiwan Symphony Orchestra featuring violinist JoJo Wang Zhijiong.
The opening concert will feature works by Schubert, Brahams and Mendelssohn.
"The Vienna Piano Trio is regarded as one of the most important chamber orchestras worldwide and will bring authentic sounds from Germany and Austria," said Xiao Tiansheng, director of the Shanghai Concert Hall.
The 20-year-old trio includes cellist Matthias Gredler, pianist Stefan Mendl, and violinist Wolfgang Redik.
Their latest release of Haydn piano trios won an Echo-Classic 2010 award.
Three days later, the Taiwan Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by Matthias Bamert, performing Rossini's "Overture to La Gazza Ladra," Stravinsky's "Violin Concerto in D Major," and Beethoven's "Symphony No 7 in A Major." Young violinist JoJo Wang will perform.
The encore will feature Mozart's "Divertimenti K136" for strings only and the famous Chinese song "Jasmine Flower."
Bamert's career began at the Cleveland Orchestra where he was resident conductor alongside Lorin Maazel, then the music director.
In 2004 he gave a concert with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. He has made more than 80 recordings, many of which have won international awards.
The Taiwan Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1945 in Taiwan. The tour of the Chinese mainland includes Shanghai and Suzhou.
Violinist JoJo Wang is considered one of the best of her generation. She received a master's degree from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music where she studied with violinist Yu Lina.
Today she studies in Berlin with maestro Kolja Blacher, the previous concert master of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.
