UK orchestras hit the right note

TWO top orchestras from the United Kingdom will perform in Shanghai in the coming weeks.

Charles Dutoit, who collaborated with the Philadelphia Orchestra in May, will guide the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra during its concert at the Music in the Summer Air Festival this weekend.

London Symphony Orchestra will stage two concerts to open the new performance season at Pudong's Shanghai Oriental Art Center in September.

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra's concert at Shanghai Grand Theater will include J. Sibelius's "Finland," E.W. Korngold's "Violin Concerto in D Major" and H. Berlioz's "Fantastic Symphony."

Canadian violinist?Chantal Juillet will collaborate with the orchestra.

Meanwhile, it will be the third time the London Symphony Orchestra performs at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center. They also visited the city in 2004 and 2007.

This time the orchestra will be directed by conductor Kristjan Jarvi. Chinese cellist Wang Jian and pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet will perform.

The orchestra will also take part in UK's National Day celebration at the World Expo, giving a concert there.

"We have prepared many different programs for the encore. I hope to bring audiences fresh elements," conductor Jarvi says. "A concert should be an unknown course that is carved out. Audiences can feel the charm of music here."

The two concerts on September 9 and 10 will bring different programs.

For the first concert, Britten's "Four Sea Interludes," Shostakovich's "Cello Concerto No. 1" and Bartok's "Concerto for Orchestra" will be performed.

The next day, prepare to hear Bernstein's "Symphonic Dances from West Side Story," Liszt's "Piano Concerto No. 1" and Rachmaninoff's "Symphonic Dances."

Anyone who shows proof of purchase for all the past five performances by UK orchestras at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center can get two free tickets, each worth 1,280 yuan (US$188), to one of London Symphony Orchestra's concerts.
