Webber’s ‘Sound of Music’ set for city debut

THE Broadway version of the famous Von Trapps story will make its debut in Shanghai next year.
“The Sound of Music” will be staged at Shanghai Grand Theater from January 8-18 and audience will hear well-known songs like “Edelweiss,” “Do-Re-Mi” and “The Lonely Goatherd.”
Though it will be the musical’s first time in Shanghai, “The Sound of Music” movie (1965) was shown in cinemas across China in the 1980s.
The musical to be staged in Shanghai is Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 2006 recreation and is based on the original Broadway version.
The original musical, based on the true story of an Austrian family with seven children, wowed audiences when it premiered in New York in 1959. It won six Tony Awards including Best Musical.
The story of the Von Trapp family became even better known when it was adapted into the 1965 movie starring Julie Andrews. It won five Oscar awards.
Songs like “Edelweiss,” “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” and title track “The Sound of Music” were among the most popular of the time.
The story about loving your family and country still rings true today and it recently topped the list of “The 10 Greatest Musicals” in a survey among US residents.
“It makes many people’s lives better” and “it is the most beautiful thing to love and care for each other” were some of the most frequent comments about the musical.
While keeping most of the songs and storyline, Webber’s version adds more colorful dancing, sound effects and sets such as the Alps.
Webber’s version has toured the UK, Canada, Japan, South Africa, Singapore, New Zealand and some cities in China before reaching Shanghai.
