Yueju Opera stars to be given rare performance honor

JIN Caifen and Huang Sha were an incredibly talented couple famed for their expertise and achievements with traditional Yueju Opera.

Jin, a master performer who opened the Jin Performing School decades ago, is still famous for her clear and graceful singing. Her husband Huang, who passed away 20 years ago, was a well-known Yueju Opera director.

From May 27 to June 2, the Shanghai Yueju Opera House will stage a series of performances to pay tribute to the couple's achievements.

During Jin's 60-year-plus Yueju Opera singing career, she has performed all the classics including "The Jade Hairpin," "The Story of the Western Wing" and "Empress Hanwen."

Her natural and diversified performing style, and her rich vocals were influenced by Yueju Opera masters like Yuan Xuefen, Fan Ruijuan and Fu Quanxiang.

The series of performances will feature authentic Jin School performances presented by her apprentices, like Zhang Kangying and Huang Meiju.

They will sing Jin's representative roles. The 79-year-old Jin will also perform extracts.

At another special show to honor director Huang, noted theater actor Feng Chunchao, a close friend of Huang, will share his memories of the late respected artist.

The performances will also look back on the couple's artistic contributions and their harmonious partnership.

The organizers will also host lectures and workshops accentuating the couple's distinctive performing and directing skills.

A new book about the couple's life and careers will be released.
