Lotus festival celebrates exotic and ecological art

THE 2nd Lotus Culture and Art Festival and photography contest will run through until October 30 in Chongming.

This year’s festival is centered around the theme of “Lotus in Xisha, Beauty in Chongming.” The festival features the cultural significance of the lotus and the show consists of a number of famous authors and artists creating live dedications to the flower, alongside song and dance performances.

Like last year, the festival is being held at the Chongming Lotus Garden. The garden, which covers over 373,333 square meters of land, is home to over 350 varieties of lotus and a science exhibition center, where exotic varieties of the flower, such as the “Space Lotus” and “Ancient Lotus,” are on display.

The garden is located within Luhua Town, known as the home of the tangerine, where a unique natural environment thrives. The town’s surrounding area is the site of one of China’s largest natural freshwater lakes, including Mingzhu Lake, Xisha Wetland Park, Baodao crab farm, Taiyuan Water Town and numerous other scenic destinations.

The town’s current goal is to take advantage of Chongming’s world-class ecological environment, the town’s own abundant agriculture and tourism resources, and push the town’s development to create a “one park, two areas, three belts” construction plan.

“One park” refers to the establishment of a park around Mingzhu Lake; “two areas” refers to the creation of a citrus and lotus regional specialty agricultural product demonstration area and a Xisha agricultural demonstration area; finally, “three belts” refers to the three road industry belt, formed by Baohu Road, Xinbao Road, and Sanlu Road, which will cater to leisure, sightseeing, and accommodation.

The Lotus Culture and Art Festival is regarded as one of the first vital steps toward the development of leisure, agriculture and tourism in Luhua.

Visitors to the festival are not only welcome to admire the natural scenery and blooming lotuses, but also to taste lotus roots and participate in the photography contest. Other cultural activities offered include a traditional food fair and Chinese speed dating. In addition, Luhua’s distinctive topography makes it an ideal place to take a ferry and watch the sun set over the Yangtze River.
