Summer classes where kids can flourish
THE Youth League Committee of Putuo and the district’s community service centers are offering primary school students a range of summer classes to help provide children with fun and safe experiences and relieve pressure on working parents.
One of them is at Caoyang community. Ever since its launch in 2014, the Caoyang Community summer classes have been hailed a success by children and parents. Over the passing years, around 300 children have taken part in the classes, most of whom are Grade 1 to 3 students of primary schools.
“This year, over 90 volunteers are also joining the classes,” said Wu Juan, an official with the Caoyang Community Service Center. “The volunteers, who are college and high school students of Putuo District will work with experienced teachers to look after children and help with their homework.”
Government subsidy
The government provides a subsidy to make the classes affordable for the 800-yuan (US$118) four-week class.
The classrooms are equipped with a first-aid kit, water fountain, electrical mosquito-repellent incense and foam-rubber cushion to offer a safe and cozy environment.
The courses cover a wide range of subjects. To keep children safe, safety education was the first class. The courses also include culture, science, nature, art and health. The summer classes have set up a WeChat group for parents to know better about their children’s performances and progress.
Meanwhile, this summer Putuo District is hosting a training camp for outstanding high school and vocational school students. The camp aims to cultivate a group of responsible and capable students who have abilities of leadership, global vision and innovation.
Earlier this month, excellent teenagers from Los Angeles visited Putuo District on a trip of “discovering China.” They experienced the brilliant culture and custom of the city, exchanged and made good friends with local students.
