An extraordinary journey: Memories from the YCIS “Class of 2016”

THIS month, caps will be thrown high in the air at high school graduations around the world as the Class of 2016 bids farewell to their Secondary education.

For international school students in Shanghai, graduation likely means saying goodbye to the host city and country that has provided them with an array of unique experiences over the years. For students at one school in Shanghai, Yew Chung International School (YCIS), high school has truly been a kaleidoscope of opportunities in language, culture, art, music, sports, service, and much more.

Before departing for top universities around the world, several students from YCIS’s Class of 2016 reflected on the most memorable moments and achievements that will stay with them as they move forward into the next great chapter of their lives.

Students' quotes:

“I’m very happy with my development in art throughout the years, not just in terms of skills, but also in terms of mindset. In IB, my teacher pushed my limits for thinking about art with a global perspective and social connection. He showed me how art can really shape people’s thinking and how the subject can work on a bigger scale, and this is the outlook I’ll take with me to art school next year.”
— Cathy, Gubei campus

“I’m from France and when I first came to YCIS six years ago I couldn’t speak any English or Chinese, but with the help of my teachers and friends, I have improved my language skills dramatically. Gaining proficiency in these two languages has definitely been one of my biggest accomplishments to date.”
— Marion, Gubei campus

“I’m most proud of our back-to-back season championship victories in volleyball. Also, as the captain of the team this year, I feel like I took real strides as a leader.”
— Dylan, Century Park campus

“I’m thankful for the confidence I have gained and the leadership opportunities I have taken advantage of in Secondary. This year I was a head Prefect, and this has helped me build confidence in leading people and running and organizing events.” — Imogen, Gubei campus

“I’m most proud of how I have progressed musically. I started to learn the violin in Year 2 as part of YCIS’s violin program. It was a new experience for me and I continued to study the instrument throughout my time here. By playing the violin, I have participated in orchestras, ensembles, and many concerts, helping me to build confidence and ability in the instrument.”
— Melody, Gubei campus

“I am most proud of how I developed, not just as a student, but as a person, during my time at YCIS. My way of thinking has definitely evolved, and my mindset has broadened more globally.”
— Matthew, Century Park campus

“My favorite part about my years at YCIS has been my Chinese classes. It’s not only my favorite language to learn, but also my teacher noticed my strengths and helped me develop my critical thinking skills.”
— Kiki, Century Park campus

“I’ll always cherish the memories from our Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) trips, where we engaged with real Chinese culture and also grew closer as a class. During our 2012 trip to Guizhou, I vividly remember how my friends and I sang our way hiking up a mountain to the local village where we were staying. It’s something that I will never forget as it was one of the first times I had experienced such warmth and comfort among friends.”
— Rachel, Century Park campus

“Looking back on high school, I’ll always remember the small moments, including the time I spent with my classmates in our IB lounge. When we were there, we shared ideas, stories, and laughs, and we were always there to support one another. I’m going to miss these exchanges with my friends the most.”
— Jenna, Gubei campus

“Last year, for my IB Creativity, Action, and Service (CAS) project, my classmate and I started the ‘Make a Difference’ (MAD) Run at our school, a charity run which raised over 60,000 yuan (US$914)for cancer research in Shanghai. Working with the school faculty, fellow students, and families was a really enjoyable experience, and I’m proud we were able to contribute so much together as a community.”
— Toby, Century Park campus

“My greatest accomplishment is the international education that I have gained, as it is quite unique and more holistic than I would have received elsewhere.”
— Bouke, Century Park campus

“For me, the most memorable trip from high school was when I traveled to Tanzania for the school’s World Classroom program. It was really a once-in-a-lifetime experience where I encountered, firsthand, a mix of nature and culture, and I met a lot of new friends.”
— Keita, Gubei campus
