Aspiring rock stars do battle on school stage
THE annual Battle of the Bands event successfully raised more than 8,000 yuan (US$1,218) at Yew Chung International School of Shanghai's Gubei campus, to provide students from Huahong Migrant School with musical instruments.
Many students with an interest in music dream of becoming a rock star and the Battle of the Bands event not only gives them a taste of achievement but also cultivates a caring nature by offering the chance for a migrant school to learn more about music.
More than 300 people attended the evening in which 10 amazing bands, with 46 members ranging in age from 11 to 19, competed on stage.
Each band's logo was projected on the wall as they delivered artful and professional performances to an excited audience.
According to the school, this year's Battle of the Bands was the biggest in the YCIS Shanghai annual event's history.
The faces on stage at the Battle of the Bands change every year, and it is always exciting to see fresh musical talents take to the stage and compete against each other.
The winning band was Gospel of Steve, while Colliding Waves were the runners-up.
After receiving their award, Gospel of Steve performed an encore and the winning band's singer mentioned that this was the last time the band would perform together for the students because the other members of the band will graduate and leave the school this year.
The band made sure they gave their best performance for the encore because they wanted to leave a great lasting memory of their time together at YCIS Shanghai.
Music is a significant component at YCIS Shanghai, with primary students starting with the violin and progressing to learn Chinese and Western classical music and instruments.
The newly built recording studio and refurbished music rooms provide an excellent atmosphere for the music education program and a place where students can practice, record and prepare for concerts.
