'Better school, better life'
THIS has been a year of academic achievement for Shanghai United International School.
Thanks to the teamwork and contributions from all staff, students and parents, SUIS has received the seal of approval from the IB to become an IB World School. We are one of the only two PYP (Primary Years Program) schools in Shanghai to get the IB accreditation as a bilingual World School. In addition, the SUIS was awarded the title of China's national "Excellent School."
Our bilingual team-teaching and our East meets West philosophy have made SUIS a model for other schools all over China. The East meets West pioneering journey under the modern educational system has been selected as a Shanghai educational research project, so there is both local and national interest in SUIS. Both students and staff are now used to being under the spotlight and interviewed by our regular visitors.
This year we successfully opened PYP Primary Reception (five-year-olds) as well as the International Curriculum of England (ICE) pathway in grades 3 and 4, which now provides our 500 students and their parents with additional educational options. We have adjusted our international stream curriculum structure and timetables to increase teaching sessions and provide better transdiciplinary teaching and learning. Our Assessment of Pupil Progress system (UK-based) gives parents clear information about the level at which their child is working in English. Even though some of our students do not speak English as a first language, our students' English assessment results have reached the average level for those in the English speaking world (native speakers). We have introduced the online maths project "Mathletics," which has greatly motivated our students' learning of maths, and our research shows that students are now performing as well in maths as those who are two years older.
But is it all hard graft? Not at all! Ballet, martial arts, musical instrument tuition, creative arts and the school musical production (Kung Fu Pooh!) have made their debut in our international stream after-school activities, which have enriched students' school life and cultivated their artistic, aesthetic and performing abilities.
What is more, it has reflected the huge success in fusing the best of East with West and liberating the joy of learning. SUIS students always have a smile on their faces!
Our staff and parents have actively taken part in community activities such as charity events, environmental protection and World Expo volunteering, which has demonstrated SUIS' broad international vision and strong social responsibilities.
Looking back over the past year, it has been full of excitement, success and achievement.
Let us look forward to a wonderful future as we continue to grow and flourish, fulfilling the promise "Better school, better life!"
