Bringing Britain's best to education

DECIDING which school to send your children to is one of the biggest decisions parents must face wherever they are in the world. Choosing a good school is not an easy matter at all.

As one of the top international schools in Shanghai, the British International School Shanghai Puxi campus enjoys a fine reputation for providing a high-quality British education in Shanghai and provides one of the best options for parents looking for a school in the west of the city.

Established in September 2005, the school is run by Nord Anglia, a world leader in international education. The company operates two integrated divisions, International Schools and Learning Services, which are based solidly upon decades of outstanding education in the UK.

There are 1,000 students aged from 2 to 18 and 100 expatriate teachers at the school. The students come from more than 50 countries and regions including Britain, the US, Australia, France and South Korea. Students who have graduated here have entered universities all around the world.

BISS seeks to prepare its students to play their part as responsible citizens in an increasingly challenging and rapidly changing world.

The British educational experience on offer at the school is unashamedly traditional in many respects but at the same time forward-looking and dynamic.

In spite of the economic climate the school is continuing to extend its campus and facilities.

By September 2010, the new unified campus at Puxi with an additional 32,000 square meters, will be opened.

At present BISS Puxi features two modern, extremely well-appointed campuses with separate specialist facilities for primary and secondary students in Huacao Town, Minhang District.

Both are ideally situated within minutes of a range of very popular expatriate residential areas, and offer all the key elements of the English National Curriculum with additional benefits afforded by its status as an IBO World School.

The new single campus will be at the present primary site very close to the Shanghai Racquet Club in Huacao Town. Approximately half of the new campus area will be new school buildings featuring a new indoor pool, a 400-seat theater and the other half will be playing fields with a variety of new sports facilities.

"It will become one of the top campus facilities in Shanghai. Our beautiful, spacious campus and high-quality modern facilities will enable us to offer a rich variety of extracurricular activities which further encourage the development of each individual's strengths and interests," says Kevin Foyle, the principal, who has more than 20 years' experience of education and came to Shanghai two years ago.

Work on the new campus has started and the new building will be completed next March and put into use in September.

Foyle loves Shanghai, which he describes as a city full of energy and well stocked with beautiful architecture. He is passionate about his career in education and his students.

"Our staff are the single most important ingredient in our school's success because it is the staff who inspire our pupils to produce their best, through their teaching, their behavior and the expectations they set."
