Camp nurtures next generation of journalists

Children have a natural curiosity about everything. Over the recent winter holiday, a group of cub reporters from the Student Reporter Training Camp, organized by Shanghai Daily, learned how to prepare questions, conduct interviews and write their very own articles.

Starting with a brief journalism class taught by a chief staff member, our cub reporters learned the basics of how to be a professional journalist, how to take news photographs and how a newspaper is produced. Wang Yanlin, chief reporter at Shanghai Daily laid out the ABC’s of how to raise questions during an interview. According to Wang’s process: A stands for active, B for brave and C for clever. The Q&A section is very active. The cub reporters raised questions one after another. Some were about writing and others were about newspaper editing. They all get a precious gift — a reporter’s notebook.

After visiting the Shanghai Daily newsroom, the students were presented with the challenge of doing real interviews.

The first stop was McDonald’s. Welcomed by a staff member with the fast-food chain, our cub reporters took part in “Open Door” activities organized at the McDonald’s branch on Hongqiao Road.

First our reporters introduced themselves to each other. Then after a warm-up activity, they dressed in chef uniforms and explored the “secrets” of the kitchen.

“I like eating McDonald’s chicken wings and French fries very much and was always wondering how they are cooked and where they are stored,” says Ethan Dong, one of the cub reporters. “With a detailed explanation from staff, I learned where the ingredients are stored as well as knowledge of food safety.”

Another highlight was a DIY hamburger-making activity. Some budding writers wanted to give their creations to their parents, so they learned how to wrap and package their food.

They were also encouraged to deliver ice cream cones to customers and talk with them. In the end, each of the cub reporters earned a certificate for their efforts.

“It’s really interesting to play with children who are curious and active,” said one McDonald’s staff member. “They posed many professional questions about food and cooking and I think we can learn from each other.”

The next stop was the Shanghai Amway Experience Center, where customers can sample various Amway products, view demonstrations and learn more about product development at the company.

Walking through the Nutrilite Zone, our young reporters learned that the company’s Nutrilite supplements were officially used by the Chinese national Olympic team.

Then, they tried water purified by the company’s ESpring purifier. This high density activated carbon filter is said to remove 150 kinds of pollutants, including formaldehyde and chlorine. They were also introduced to the company’s Atmosphere air purifier, which Amway claims can reduce and eliminate 97 kinds of air pollutants, including bacteria and allergy irritants.

The youngsters had the chance to conduct an interview with a staff member from Amway. They raised questions about the Amway Charity Foundation, which is devoted to a charity program called the Spring Sprout Kitchen.

This project aims to establish kitchens and train kitchen administrators at schools in mid- and western-China with high concentrations of left-behind children who may not otherwise have access to a balanced and nutritional diet. By the end of 2015, Amway had established 3,815 Spring Sprout Kitchens and helped 1.9 million left-behind children.

“I saw sparkling lights in these children’s eyes. They are very active and have quick responses,” said Coco Han, a public affairs manager from Amway, in reference to the writers-in-training.

I like the Amway Experience Center where I drank the purified water, learned how to protect the environment and explored nature. I want to join the Spring Sprout Kitchen project to help more left-behind children.
