Charity ambassador hopes to inspire the young
LIU Siyu, a sophomore from Shandong Institute of Business and Technology, has been keen about caring for the children of migrant workers, the elderly and environmental protection issues for eight years.
Starting as a volunteer to support people infected with HIV/AIDS, he now leads Siyu Harmony Society and inspires young people to join in volunteering and charity causes.
His charitable footprint has covered his hometown Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan Province.
By participating in training on anti-drug and HIV/AIDS-prevention education, he went deep into local villages. To promote energy-saving concepts, he visited local families and educated them door-to-door.
"You need to be sincere when doing charity," Liu said. "We should be true to those who are in need."
Under his call, more than 1,000 volunteers have joined his team to "protect wildlife, and object to the illegal killing and trade."
Recognized as the "Youth Ambassador of Love" by UNICEF, he is now becoming the ambassador for an innovative charity challenge co-held by Waseda University and Tingyi (Cayman Islands) Holding Corp, which owns the Kang Shi Fu food brand.
The challenge, launched in April and themed "small charity, big wonder," advocates that every participant should do charitable actions, no matter how small, to help society and its people step by step.
A part of Liu's role as the ambassador is to tour 10 cities across the Taiwan Strait including Shanghai and Beijing to hold lectures and share his story about doing charity work with young people.
"I hope it will form a snowball effect," Liu said. "Although eight years have passed, it is just the beginning of my road to charity."
Winners of the challenge will be awarded 100,000 yuan (US$15,412) to start their charity program and a chance to study at Waseda University. More information about the challenge can be found online at www.masterkong.com.cn
